Reel Connections Singles Mixer

Last Sunday afternoon, about twenty people gathered for the first edition of Reel Connections. It wasn’t a screening, and it wasn’t quite a talk either. Instead, it was an experiment — one that brought together film posters, movies, and conversation in a shared space, with the simple intention of helping people connect more naturally.

The premise was straightforward. Guests arrived, picked a postcard-sized film image that resonated with them, and used it as a starting point for conversation. From there, the afternoon unfolded through paired exchanges, small group trivia, and open mixing. Movies weren’t treated as objects of expertise, but as shared cultural touchstones — fragments of memory, feeling, and association that made it easier to begin talking to someone new.

As someone trained in the arts and humanities, I’ve always been drawn to intertextuality and hybrid spaces — moments where different mediums, disciplines, or uses overlap. Film posters, after all, sit at the intersection of art, commerce, storytelling, and public space. A social mixer, on the other hand, is usually framed as something purely functional. Bringing these two together felt like a natural extension of that long-standing fascination: what happens when cinema becomes social architecture, and images become prompts for human connection?

Reel Connections was very much a spirit-of-experimentation kind of afternoon. Some conversations were light, others surprisingly thoughtful. Some people came curious, others hopeful, many somewhere in between. What mattered most was the openness to try something slightly different — to step into a space that didn’t rely on scripts, profiles, or expectations.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who showed up on a Sunday afternoon with curiosity, generosity, and good faith. Events like this only work because people are willing to participate fully — to listen, to speak, and to share the room. This was just a beginning. And like any good opening scene, it leaves me excited about what might come next.
